Penny Gillespie shows a motorcycle cop how to properly hold a polo mallet. The American team, above, and the International team, below. With limited parking and no stalls, horses are tacked on the sidewalk at night. taste of polo on a wooden horse supplied by the Army Polo Club. Gabriella Wlassits from Middleburg Polo Academy, assisted by Majors Gillespie, Humphries and Siddiqui, managed to introduce upwards of 75 children to polo on “Splinter” while thousands of participants on their way to Comedy Central’s “Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear” looked on. The Washington International Horse Show provided space during the week-long show for a booth to promote polo. The booth featured the Army Polo Club’s wooden horse, Splinter, as well as information on where to play polo from the Middleburg Polo Academy. The USPA sent its colorful trade show display and brochures on interscholastic and intercollegiate polo, while USPA Eastern Circuit Governor Jim Burton provided a DVD loop of exciting polo action, attracting many people to the booth. No opportunity to promote polo was wasted. Even the Washington DC Motorcycle Police were not exempt from learning more about polo on Wednesday evening from Army Polo Club members Penny Gillespie and Colonel Marisa Tanner. They showed one of the District’s finest the finer points of holding a mallet and the necessity of wearing a helmet. (Can the emergence of motorcycle polo in the nation’s capital be far away now?) The international military polo players tuned up for the polo demonstration with some practice chukkers at Middleburg Polo Academy’s outdoor arena, sparring against Alan and Debbie Nash’s Los Tigres team along with various players at MPA, such as former Navy officer Laura Thurston. The foreign visitors were treated to a post-practice asado, as well as several other dinners hosted by the Nashs, Gillespies, Kiyonagas and other polo players, which gave them a sampling of American hospitality. Colonel Sigon contributed greatly to the enjoyment of all with his outstanding guitar playing and singing of Argentine folk songs. All participants in the international military polo demonstration were invited to attend the Puissance event on Friday evening and the President’s Cup on Saturday evening at the horse show. Sadly, all fun things had to end, and the visiting officers departed from Washington, DC with fond memories and thoughts about the need to foster more international military events in the future.
