Throughout their stay, numerous Tinicum club members hosted their guests with dinner parties at their homes. Beyond polo games and dinner parties, the Egyptians enjoyed a trip to New York City and abundant shopping. The first match featured Tinicum’s annual Wine & Polo event, benefiting the local SPCA organization. In front of more than 600 spectators, the day began with a parade to center field by both teams, led by flags from both countries. After national anthems from the United States and Egypt were played, the teams were introduced. Playing for Team Egypt were Rany Hamlet, Hossam Sadek, Mohammed El Shamy, Ibrahim Aly Awadalla, and Sherif Amin. Playing for the Tinicum Park Polo Club were Val Washington, Tim Cheromcka, Hesham El Gharby, Dennis Santana, and Mark Mulligan. A fast-paced Saturday game ensued with a quick score by Dennis Santana for Tinicum. Another point was put on the board by Dennis with a foul shot from 40 yards. Hesham El Gharby assisted with a long shot through the uprights. Hossam Sadek fired back with a score in the third chukker for Team Egypt. Rany Hamlet of Egypt took full advantage of a Penalty 2 shot with a score on goal. Shots on goal by Egypt’s Sherif and Tinicum’s Washington and Cheromcka failed to put points on the board. Dennis Santana showed persistence with additional scores in the fifth and sixth chukker. Mark Mulligan scored the winning goal for Tinicum. The game ended with awards for both teams presented by Eastern Circuit Governor Jim Burton. The next game was played on the following Saturday, which drew a large audience anxious for another strong game between Tinicum Park and Egypt. Playing for Tinicum were Anders Hedberg, Cheryl Arnold, Dave Halliday, and Dennis Santana. Once again, Santana kicked off the game, converting a Penalty 4 for Tinicum. In the second chukker, Ibrahim Awadalla of Egypt scored with a drive down field. Dave Halliday was quick to put answer with a score for Tinicum. Both Halliday and Santana put two more scores on the board in the fourth period. Hossam Sadek of Team Egypt showed a strong performance with a pair of scores in the back half. Strong defense was displayed by Mohammed El Shamy and Sherif Amin in the second half to slow Tinicum’s edge. Cheryl Arnold persevered in the sixth chukker to score for Tinicum. The final score came from Ibrahim for Egypt, but the Tinicum team held onto its lead for the overall win. The game ended with handshakes and awards for both teams. The crowd enjoyed the international competition and the guest players enjoyed their reciprocal visit as much as the locals enjoyed having them. MID-STATES POLO REBOUNDS IN CINCINNATI Polo returned to Cincinnati, Ohio on Sept 12 when the Cincinnati Polo Club hosted the inaugural 2- to 4-goal Congressional Cup at Miami Meadows Park, located in the Cincinnati suburb of Milford, Ohio. Preliminary games were held Sept. 11 at Oakwood Farm on the beautiful Tim Hensley estate. Light rain didn’t foil the action as Buck Schott scored five goals for Wellington Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine I to overcome Fountain Specialist 6-0. Wolfhair.com defeated Wellington Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine II 6-2 with Marcos Onetto scoring four goals. Perfect weather greeted players and spectators for the final at Miami Meadows on Sunday. Conditions were ideal as the grass was short, the ground flat, and the polo fast, making for thrilling action for the spectators lined seven cars deep at the sidelines. A crowd in excess of 1,100 included many Sherif Amin, Cheryl Arnold, Dave Halliday, Anders Hedberg, Dennis Santana, Mohammed El Shamy, Hossam Sadek, and Ibrahim Aly Awadalla associated with polo, past and present.
