POLO REPORT Fross & Fross’ Antonio Campos, Cuko Escapite, Brian Warwick, Carlos Zamora and alternate Lynn Escapite won the Golf Cart Cup. “She’s a 20-year-old mare that has been with me for 13 years,” Escapite said nodding toward his chestnut mount. “I only bring her with me in case we go into overtime.” For the first 41-plus minutes of the championship match, it looked like Kaboom was going to get the day off. Fort Knox, which had taken an 8-6 lead in the fourth chukker, led 10-9 as the clock ticked toward zero. But with five seconds left, there was a foul in front of the goal and Antonio Campos chipped in the game-tying goal from 15 yards on a penalty shot. Escapite also had a big hand in the 6-Goal Fort Knox Cup but this time around, there was no reason for last- second or overtime heroics. When final counting was done Fross & Fross defeated Ft. Knox, 14-10, to win the tournament. The win marked the second straight week that Fross & Fross won a tournament with a victory over Ft. Knox in the championship game. With Ft. Knox spending the first half of the game chasing—but not slowing down—Escapite, Fross & Fross led 3-1 at the end of the first chukker, 7-1 at the end of the second and 10-1 at halftime. Ft. Knox actually outscored Fross & Fross 6-4 in the final three chukkers, but by then the grave was already dug and half the dirt had been shoveled back. In the 6-Goal Village Home Care LLC. Cup teammates Gilberto Fross & Fross’ Cuko Escapite, Gilberto Junqueria, Paul Henley and Carlos Zamora won the Fort Knox Cup over Fort Knox. Junqueria and Oliver Butterworth proved that finding open space can provide the difference between victory In the 6-Goal Sumter Marion Insurance Cup on Oct. 24 Fort Knox led, 4-1, at the end of the first chukker, 9-4 at halftime and 11-7 going into the sixth. When Murad Ismail scored for Fross & Fross with 1:30 remaining in the sixth chukker, Fort Knox, which had led from the opening bowl-in, held an 11- 10 advantage. But, just seconds before the final whistle Brian Warwick scored his second goal of the game to give Fort Knox the title. In the WCT Ladies Fross & Fross’ Paul Henley, Oliver Butterworth, Gilberto Junqueria and David Manuel took the Home Care Cup and defeat. Creating room to move and opening passing lanes, Junquieria and Butterworth led Fross & Fross to a 12-9 win over Citizens Bank in the championship match of the tournament. After Citizens Bank drew to within 10-8 in the closing minutes of the sixth and final chukker, Butterworth thwarted a run by clearing the ball to the sideboards with a backshot. “I know that Oliver is a very classic player,” said Junquieria, who turned Butterworth’s pass into a nearly full- field, goal-scoring rush that pushed the Fross & Fross lead to 11-8 and all but sealed the final outcome. tournament Oct. 31, which marked the halfway mark of the season, Sunny Hale and Paige Boone combined for all nine of their team’s goals as Morgan Stanley/Smith Barney defeated Citizen’s First, 9-4, in the tournament’s championship match. —Steve Trivet, Villages Daily Sun NORTHEASTERN ALIANO REALTY TOPS IN THREE TOURNEYS Aliano Realty took its third victory in a row with a win in the USPA Northeast Circuit Sherman Memorial 3- to 6-goal arena tournament on September 26 at Country Farms in Medford, New York.
