POLO REPORT Continued from page 10 The Owner’s Manual; YOU: The Smart Patient; YOU: On a Diet; YOU: Staying Young; and YOU: Being Beautiful. They wrote that 16 million Americans, them included, have taken up yoga and that practicing yoga clears out stress and helps keeps them strong. The doctors cite mounting medical Kissling & Kissling’s Ernesto Flores, Ardishir Radpour, Bolko Kissling and Conrad Kissling won the 0- to 1-goal Flight in the Last Chance Cup. Barrossa’s Jeff Graham, Erik Wright, Jared Sheldon, and Gina Padilla won the 2- to 4-goal Flight of the Last Chance Cup. PACIFIC COAST LAST CHANCE CUP HAS TWO WINNERS Santa Barbara Polo Club closed out its fall season with a well-attended Last Chance Cup in mid-October. Teams from several outside polo clubs competed in the weekend tournament as well as the local members. Teams entered either a 0- to 1-goal flight or a 2- to 4-goal flight. The 1-goal flight proved extremely popular, drawing five teams. The first playoff games ended with Kissling and Kissling winning the round-robin playoff, helped by the ace penalty shooting of 10-year-old Conrad Kissling. Kissling and Kissling was also lucky in the coin toss, squeaking by a Santa Barbara team that tied it on net goals. In the other playoff, Wrightway I vanquished its sister team of Wrightway II. In the 1-goal final, Kissling and Kissling scored three unanswered field goals, but Erik Wright nailed his Penalty 4s to bring his Wrightway team back in to contention. However, the young Conrad Kissling fearlessly converted a Penalty 3 for the go-ahead goal and the 7-5 win. In the two-team 4-goal flight played over two days, Will Rogers jumped out to an early 4-1 lead behind goals from Domingo Questal and Bolko Kissling. Andrew Bossom added another goal en route to an 8-6 score in favor of Will Rogers at the end of the first day. In the second round played the next day, Barrossa quickly tied things up behind two goals from Jared Sheldon. The teams alternated goals for the next two chukkers but Barrossa went on to win handedly 17-11. evidence that supports yoga’s mind-body healing powers, including the ability to cheer you up if you find yourself in a slump. Apparently that has something to do with yoga inducing more of your body’s anti-anxiety chemicals called GARA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) to float around in your brain. Research shows that gentle stretching and meditation help reduce feelings of depression and also improve memory and balance, and reduce muscle, tendon and joint stiffness. On top of all those wonderful affects, there is evidence that practicing yoga for several years will help with unwanted weight gain. Oz and Roizen wrote: “Yoga also keeps your joints young and flexible, making you as peppy as a puppy.” I am not so sure about the peppy as a puppy statement, but I do have to report that yoga has helped me to be in better condition for riding and playing polo. The interesting thing about yoga is that it is a practice that never quite gets perfected, much like polo. Our practice is the pursuit of perfection, and we can always learn something new as we grow older and hopefully grow wiser. Better physical conditioning for the rigors of riding will allow both veteran and novice players to become more confident in their ability to hang on to, and lean off of, the saddle, thus permitting them to concentrate more on controlling the horse and hitting the ball. More comfortable and more confident riding means polo that it is much safer and much more fun to play. As I see it, the practice of yoga is a good way to be in better touch (union) with your mind, body and spirit, and maybe in better touch with your horse. That can only be a good thing for all polo players. POLO PLAYERS EDITION 59 KIM KUMPART KIM KUMPART
