BROKE IN A TANGLE POLO PLAYER TIM RICE recently published a book on some of the greatest moments in horse racing history, complete with the triumph and tragedy that accompany them. Broke in a Tangle recounts some of the more memorable horses in racing including Seattle Slew, John Henry, Cigar, Northern Dancer, Alydar, Ruffian and Eight Belles, as well as notable racing individuals including Eddie Arcaro, Bill Shoemaker, Paul Mellon, Don Stewart and Phil Rubbicco. The book is receiving high praise from notable people like actor John Goodman and Hall of Fame jockey Chris McCarron. At just under 200 pages, the book is a fun and easy read with some great historical black-and-white photos to accompany the stories. Rice’s knowledge of thoroughbred racing comes from inside and out. He has been involved in the sport as an owner, breeder, trainer, and exercise rider, as well as a handicapper-bettor, and a longtime commentator on Triple Crown races for New Orleans sports talk radio. Since graduating from Louisiana State University, he made a career in the stock market and is currently managing partner of Rice, Voelker LLC, a New Orleans-based stock brokerage firm he co-founded in 1996. Rice’s annual study of the Kentucky Derby was profiled in a front-page story in the Wall Street Journal, and his short stories have been finalists in fiction competitions sponsored by the Faulkner Society of New Orleans and the Thoroughbred Times. Following Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the partners of his firm formed the Rice Voelker Fund for Recovery, a zero-overhead charity to aid victims of the storm. Contributions total nearly $1 million. One-hundred percent of net proceeds from the book will go to the fund. Rice, a 1-goal player, is a member of the New Orleans Polo Club. He and his wife, Jennifer, also an equestrian, live with their Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and horses in Folsom, Louisiana. The book can be purchase online at amazon.com or through the publisher’s website at arthurhardypublishing.com EUREKA, IT’S A ZEPPELIN! SEVERAL MEMBERS OF THE MENLO POLO CLUB joined a handful of members of the press for a ride in a zeppelin in advance of the Madelyn Gilmore Jason Memorial Tournament played on September 25-26. Sponsor Airship Ventures whisked the group up and over the Menlo Polo Club providing a bird’s-eye view of the grounds and a good look at other Silicon Valley, California landmarks. The Airship Ventures zeppelin, aptly named Eureka, is the only passenger airship in the United States and one of only two in existence. Eureka is 15 feet longer then a 747 airplane but has the advantage of fold-down windows, and a slower speed, allowing you to stick your head out for a breath of fresh air mid-flight.
