SOUTHWESTERN ST. LOUIS DOMINATES PRESTONWOOD WCT Prestonwood International Women’s Championship Tournament attracted the best female polo players from all over the world to Dallas, Texas, October 7-10. The event kicked off with a Denim and Diamonds Gala produced by the Ladies Polo Auxiliary of Texas where the teams were introduced and a Calcutta was held. A Men versus Women Battle of the Sexes Challenge wrapped up the weekend events. It was an action-packed four days. The first 2-goal match put Ancha Polo in the lead after dowing Catena, consisting of some of the best women college polo players from Texas and Hawaii, 8-4. Catena came back on Saturday playing a tougher game, but St. Louis’ Lesley Ann Fong-Yee, Caroline Anier, Tina Natorp and Cathy Alba won the 4-goal Bracket of the Prestonwood WCT. couldn’t pull it off against Ancha, led by Jamaican Lesley Ann Fong-Yee, who was on the winning teams in both the 2- and 4-goal brackets. In the 4-goal bracket, Jimeni polo was pitted against St. Louis in a ferocious battle. St. Louis had a tough start after Rosie Ross was unable to make it after falling and suffering a concussion. Then Robin Melton had to cancel after she was run over by a horse while flagging a game in Aiken, South Caroline. Lesley Ann Fong-Yee gamely stepped in for Ross, while Alba took Melton’s spot. The highest-rated woman player in the U.S., Sunny Hale, led Jimeni with three of its four goals but the more balanced St. Louis team proved too tough. Two-goalers Caroline Anier and Lesley Ann Fong-Yee combined for four goals and Tina Natorp added another pair to take the 6-4 win. The next 4-goal game had Prestonwood downing LCG 9-4. Prestonwood was powered by four goals by Erica Gandomcar, two goals each from Sherri-Lyn Hensman and Katherine Campos and a goal from Natascha Baecher. Two-goal Stormie Hale scored three goals for LCG added to a goal from Angela York. LCG met up with Jimeni for the consolation the next day. Jimeni took control early while silencing LCG in the first three periods. Stormie Hale put LCG on the board in the last period with two goals, added to one from York. Meanwhile Stormie’s sister Sunny nailed a game-high four goals in the 8-3 victory. St. Louis and Prestonwood squared off in the final. Caroline Anier started the scoring with a penalty conversion and teammate Lesley Ann Fong-Yee followed with a goal from the field, while Prestonwood came up empty. Fong Yee and Sherri-Lyn Hensman traded goals in the second. Prestonwood caught up in the third with Natascha Baecher and Hensman tallying unanswered goals. Hensman gave Prestonwood the lead in the fourth on a Penalty 3 conversion but Anier answered with Penalty 2 conversion. Time was running out and it looked like there would be overtime, but alas, Prestonwood was whistled on a play and Anier nailed the ensuing Penalty 3 with just 15 seconds left to take the win. Prestonwood Pink beat Prestonwood Green by two goals in the first Battle of the Sexes game and the second was a tie. In other action at the club, Savannah’s Bob McCloskey, Sidro Olivas, Pipa Turbiettes, and Dana Drury with alternate Carrie Spence, took the USPA Hall of Fame Challenge Cup. ᑄᑂᑀ∀ᑱᑀᑅᑂᑤᑱᑠᑨᑀᑐ ᑠᑡᑧᑣ∀ᑈᑀᑉᑰᑡᑥᑠ—Carrie Spence (B), Natascha Baecher (1), Lesley Fong-Yee (2), Madeline Walton (B); ᑑᑠ∀ᑣᑰᑠ—Amanda Massey (A), Isabella Brenan (A), Courtney Rosa (1), Erin Brittin (B). ᑄᑂᑀ∀ᑱᑀᑇᑂᑤᑱᑠᑨᑀᑐ ᑠᑡᑧᑣ∀ᑈᑀᑔᑦᑩᑣᑰᑦ—Krissy Payne (B), Kim Snider (A), Kristy Waters (2), Sunny Hale (3); ᑗ∀ᑃᑀᑕᑱ#ᑦ!—Cathy Alba (A), Tina Natorp (A), Caroline Anier (2), Lesley Fong-Yee (2); .ᑕᑑᑓ—Abi Abel (1), Angela York (1), Stormie Hale (2), Andrea Walton POLO PLAYERS EDITION 55 WALTER WORKMAN WALTER WORKMAN
