Gisar's full brother is Gusar's sire. In addition to the Argentine horses, horses found in Russia are now being trained to play. In fact, one of the club's polo ponies is Gisa, a 9-year-old Akhal Teke, a rare and ancient breed from Turkmenistan, thought to be one of the oldest surviving horse breeds. Gisa was an endurance champion at 30, 60 and 90 kilometers before being trained for polo. The breed is famous for its speed and endurance as shown in 1935 when difficult to train but the ones that do play polo are really good." About 10 of the club's 60 horses are Russian-bred ponies. While they don't have a formal breeding operation, the do have a few mares they breed each year. The club continues to focus on training. For the second year, the club offered weekly polo academy courses, taught by the club's Argentine professionals, 4-goal Hernan Mate's Goran Rosen, Egor Zaostrovtsev, Mischa Rodzianko, Aliona Lukonina, Celestino Rivera players to improve their skills and understanding of the rules. We hope to encourage beginners, as they provide a perfect opportunity for anyone interested in trying the sport for the first time to get involved in a fun atmosphere. Russia has a long tradition of polo that we hope to reinvigorate by making the sport more accessible." Tournament action got underway with show and traditional Argentine asado with beef specially flown in from Argentina. The courses were given from May through July and culminated with a Graduation Cup competition between the participants. Held under the patronage of the Argentine Ambassador to Russian, the cup marked the beginning of summer. In the final on June 5, Team Mate beat Team Malbec 6-4, while Tango beat Pampas 7-5 in the subsidiary match. Jose Maria Venere, the Chargé d'Affaires of the Argentine Embassy, presented the prizes. After the match, guests enjoyed a tango annual Russian Open, sponsored by Beluga Vodka. The event is a popular fixture on the summer social calendar and attracted a large audience. Four teams competed over two days from August 20-21. While Moscow's city center was deluged with rain, the polo club basked in later summer sunshine.
